Those who are able to speak with more than two languages during his life may reduce the risk of dementia in old age, according to a new study.
Research conducted on 230 men and women with average age of 73 years plus the ability to speak between two to seven different languages. Only 44 people or 19% of all the participants had memory problems.
Those who can speak 3 languages at risk of memory problems three times lower than those who can speak 2 languages. Further they are able to speak 4 or more languages have a five times lower risk of having memory problems than those who can speak 2 languages.
"It seems that control more than two languages, especially foreign language are able to protect their memory that have been aged,"says Magali Perquin, PhD of the Center for Health Studies, Public Research Center for Health in Luxembourg.
He said further research is needed to determine whether this protection is only limited to the ability to think in terms of language or no profit on the other cognitive functions.
Research published by the American Academy of Neurology was conducted in the area of Luxembourg where its inhabitants much mastered other languages besides the mother tongue.
